How do I register a trailer?


Excise tax:
 

There is no excise tax on trailers unless it is a camper trailer or is ever used for sleeping (such as a horse trailer). 


New registrations:

If the trailer was purchased from a dealer, you will need:
- bill of sale
- blue title application (if over 3,000 lbs net weight) No title needed if weight of empty trailer is under 3,000 lbs.
- payment for state registration fee.  Click here for fee schedule
- payment for excise tax (if applicable)
- $4 agent fee

If the trailer was purchased in a private sale, you will need:
- signed bill of sale
- title, if model year 1995 or newer & over 3,000 lbs net weight, signed over to new owner
- payment for sales tax (5.5% of the purchase price)

Re-registrations:
You will need:
- payment for excise tax (if applicable) 
- payment for state registration fee.  Click here for fee schedule
- $3 agent fee

You may register a boat or utility trailer for one year or two years.  A camper trailer may be registered for only one year.
