Property Tax Relief Programs
The Maine Residents Property Tax and Rent Refund "Circuit Breaker" Program has been repealed and replaced by a refundable Property Tax Fairness Credit that can be claimed on the Maine Individual Income Tax Form. Homestead Exemption - This program provides property tax relief for Maine residents who have owned a homestead in Maine for the twelve months immediately preceding April 1st. To apply for this exemption, fill out an application and submit it to the Town's Assessors' Agent. Veteran Exemption - A veteran who is a Maine resident and who served active duty during a recognized war period and who is 62 years or older, or who is receiving 100% disability as a veteran, or who became 100% disabled while serving, is elegible for property tax relief as described in Bulletin No. 7 (Veteran Exemptions). To apply for this exemption, fill out an application and submit it to the Town's Assessors' Agent. Veteran's Widow/Widower Exemption - A tax exemption is available to the widow or widower of a veteran who meets certain requirements as described in Bulletin No. 7 (Veteran Exemptions). To apply for this exemption, fill out an application and submit it to the Town's Assessors' Agent. Paraplegic Veteran - A veteran who received a federal grant for a specially adapted housing unit may be eligible for property tax relief as described in Bulletin No. 7 (Veteran Exemptions). To apply for this exemption, fill out an application and submit it to the Town's Assessors' Agent. Blind Exemption - An individual who is determined to be legally blind is eligible for property tax relief. To apply for this exemption, fill out an application and submit it to the Town's Assessors' Agent. Farmland - Property owners who have land in agricultural production who meet certain other requirements may qualify for tax relief under the State of Maine's Farmland Program as described in Bulletin No. 20 (Farmland Tax Law). To apply for this program, fill out an application and submit it to the Town's Assessors' Agent. Tree Growth - Property owners with at least 10 forested acres who meet certain other requirements may qualify for tax relief under the State of Maine's Tree Growth Program as described in Bulletin No. 19 (Tree Growth Tax Law). To apply for this program, fill out an application and submit it to the Town's Assessors' Agent. Open Space - Property owners who have land that is preserved or restricted in use to provide a public benefit may qualify for tax relief under the State of Maine's Open Space Program as described in Bulletin No. 21 (Open Space Tax Law).
